Somogygeszti is a quiet village situated in the province Somogy and lies between Lake Balaton (approx. 45 km) and the city of Kaposvár (approx. 25 km). Coming from Lake Balaton on the main road number 67 in the direction of Kaposvár you take a right turn in Mernye and just follow the road to the right until you reach Somogygeszti.
The village has about 500 inhabitants en owns 1 bar or community centre and 2 small supermarkets.
The village further owns a school, a football field, a castle), a manege and of course a church. The flowersbeds next to the streets are well taken care of.
As you pass the castle (about 3 minutes from the camping) you find the manege. There you have the possibility to take riding lessons. For the more experienced riders it is a ‘must’ (according to some of our guests) to survey the area under the guidance of an instructor (who speaks English). Information about the manege can be required at the reception.
The word ‘geszti’ probably stems from the word ‘gesztenye’ (chestnut). It may well be that in the old days there were a lot of chestnut trees around the village. Around the village you can find many corn fields.
Although no walking routes are set out, the surroundings of the village are well suitable for longer or shorter walks. Due to the small hills the roads, fields and woods around Somogygeszti are a challenge for mountainbikers.
Near the village small winehouses can to be found, many of which are still being used. Wine is maid mainly for own use. There are some houses were now and again get-to-gethers are organized. It can happen that during the weekend people meet and our guests are welcome to join them for a meal and drinks (against a small fee).
They serve the national drink Palinka (which is a strong alcoholic beverage 52%), wine and soft drinks. Dinner consists of the traditional food, like Gulyash soup or Pörkölt (a stew with pork meat, lard, paprika, tomatoes and other spices). But also Lecsó, which is a mix of onions and paprika. To relax a quiet walk is recommended.
And when the night falls you can enjoy the beautiful view to the sky. You can see stars anywhere. And when the sky is clear you may even see the milky way. An astonishing view!
